Here Is What We Know About DJI Mavic

Is DJI Mavic Phantom's successor ?

There have already been many wonders in the world of drones. Recently, many rumours about DJI Mavic are doing rounds in the market. Many pictures of the new drone are floating on the internet.

On 15th August 2016, DJI got the trademark for the name "Mavic". After looking at the description of the trademark, we can safely conclude that DJI will be using this name for a new class of drone.

DJI MAVIC UPDATES:

On 1st September, new photos, possibly of DJI Mavic, got leaked on the internet. The full body shot of Mavic was doing rounds on the internet. This picture proved that there is not going to be an FPV drone from DJI anytime soon this year. Mavic seems to be a small foldable camera drone. The target audience for this drone will be those customers who wish to carry their drone anywhere and everywhere.

This is, probably, not as exciting as a racing drone but the market has endless possibilities for a drone like this. People, today, are looking for viable and smaller drones which are easier to operate. Just like cameras and laptops, the smaller the drones, the more people use them. To deal with the changing scenarios, companies like Yuneec are desperately searching for new solutions for the customers.

If the latest pictures of the drone are to be trusted, we can get to more definite conclusions about the front section of Mavic. Just like Phantom 4, Mavic has two cameras on the front for avoiding any kind of obstacle.

The gimbal and the camera, both appear to be protected by a tinted spherical shell. It seems like this shell has been provided to protect the gimbal from destruction in case of a crash. The new pictures clearly tell us how the arms of the drone will fold out. The back arms will swing out vertically while the front arms will swing out horizontally.

When looking carefully at the pictures of the side of the drone, we can say that the side profile of Mavic is beautiful. We still do not know much about the side profile but from the pictures, we can guess there will be two new circular plates on the body of the drone. As these plates will be on the downside of the drone, we can assume that these might be a replacement for the ultrasonic sensors of Phantom 4. These ultrasonic sensors, in Phantom 4, are used to measure height. We can also make a wild guess that DJI will be using laser LIDAR altimeter. Its use can possibly increase Mavic's height holding

These ultrasonic sensors, in Phantom 4, are used to measure height. We can also make a wild guess that DJI will be using laser LIDAR altimeter. Its use can possibly increase Mavic's height holding ability to over 50 feet. On looking carefully at the side profile of the drone, we can also see a plug-like structure. We can hope that this is an accessory port for mounting lights. This can also be some kind of random vent but an accessory port will be much better.

There have also been some leaks of DJI battery photos. If we go by the writing on the pictures, we can say that the Mavic batteries shall be 3S 11.1V 3850 mah pack with an integrated charging and discharging circuit. This system of battery would be based on the traditional DJI smart batteries. This is the perfect capacity for a small portable drone. However, this capacity would just not have been enough if Mavic were an FPV racing drone.

Sources also suggest that DJI has recently, sent out invitations for an upcoming event. This press event is going to take place in the New York city on the 27th of September. Initially, the release date for Mavic was decided as 15th of September but now, as the press conference is going to be held on 27th, we can safely conclude that the release date has been shifted

HOW CAN DJI MAVIC CHANGE THE INDUSTRY?

If the leaked information is to be trusted, then we can say that Mavic is going to be much like Phantom 4 when in flight. However, it will be much smaller than the latter when packed up. On folding, the size of Mavic will be around 8x4x4 inches, at max. The propellers shall be foldable. Hence you won't have to worry much about mounting them.

It will be easy to carry this drone in any backpack and not specifically in the backpack specially designed for this drone. The gimbal and the camera shall be tucked closer to the body. Even the controller shall be more compact. These features are important but retaining the good features of Phantom is also extremely crucial. Mavic needs to have a good flight time, undistorted 4k video, great user interface and a great gimbal. To put it simply, Mavic needs to be a perfect aerial photography tool just like other products of DJI.

It is not always easy to shrink technology into compact and sturdy forms. Yet DJI is trying to experiment with it. This is thus, a very bold move on the part of the company. We can just hope that their experimentation is successful with the launch of DJI Mavic.
